Adieu

As you probably all know, the final grades went in earlier this week. If there are any questions or issues, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

It was a real pleasure meeting with you all every week. You are a smart, interesting group and I always enjoyed our discussions. Hope to see most of you in other classes.

And thank you for your patience. It was an eventful term, but we got through.

Best wishes for all of us for the coming year!

MJ

Reminder

Students writing the sit-down exam may bring in one sheet of paper, written or printed on one side.

The exam is at 2pm on Dec. 6 in HH227.

Take-home questions

Choose eight texts from those we have read. Choose texts by eight different writers, and only include material you have not written on for your paper (though other texts by a writer you have treated are fair game). Choose one of the following approaches and write 5-6 pages:

  1. Compare the ways in which the texts use, ignore, respond to and/or subvert “the masters’ tools.”
  2. Compare the ways in which the texts position women’s situation within a nexus of other oppression(s), such as racism or class oppression.
  3. Compare the ways in which the texts engage with the idea, or the practice, of a “women’s literary tradition.”
  4. Compare the ways in which the texts engage with conventional ideas of “femininity” or “femaleness.”

Have your exam to me, either printed or electronically, by Dec. 6 at 2pm (the beginning of the sit-down exam, in other words.)

Two things

The Graduate Students’ Assn. in F’ton is having a demonstration at noon tomorrow (Tues.) in F’ton. Cars will be going up and there will be lots of room. If you would like to go and need a ride, drop me a line.

Second thing: if any of you would like to sign this letter, please let me know.

No pressure, either to sign or to attend the demo.

See you next week!

Bonus marks!

To reiterate what was said in class, you can earn 1% extra on your final grade by attending a performance of Dracula at the Imperial this weekend (proof required: either a programme or bite marks on your neck). Earn another 1%, for a total of 2%, by writing a brief review.

Don’t say I never gave ya nothin.

No tee-vee cameras!

Bob Jones has decided he has enough classroom footage from Prof. Littlejohn’s class and so we are off the hook.

RALLY

[Click image to download PDF file, suitable for printing]

Rally for UNBSJ and Saint John Tuesday at 12 noon in the quad.

Jim Turk, Executive Director of CAUT, will be among the speakers.

Threat to UNBSJ

Folks, you may have heard or read in the news about the proposal to close UNBSJ and replace it with a polytechnic (check out the newest issue of The Baron for an excellent story). Timing is important now; the final report of the Post-secondary education Commission is due out by the end of this week, and then the provincial government will comment. It is important that we speak out now, in order to shape their response. Go to Living in interesting times for a list of City Councillors, MLAs, and MPs. Emails are fine. In fact, because of the time factor, emails would be best.
